What Is A Redemption Group?
Redemption Groups are intense small groups, focused on gospel-centered heart change in the face of our deepest wounds and longings. They offer a setting for dealing with the most difficult struggles of life, from abuse and loss, to destructive compulsions. But they also apply the gospel to the frustrations of our daily grind, confronting our tendency to distance ourselves from God even in the mundane.
Walking In The Light
Redemption Groups are participatory and require a high level of commitment and willingness. This is not a class where learning can be passive. The large group will meet briefly each week for a short teaching time, and then break up into smaller groups. Each group is led by two qualified leaders, and limited in size to preserve a dynamic of deep, focused dialogue. Participants should expect to expose their lives to others, and be willing to engage the struggles of others. Reading and journaling assignments will follow the content of the redemption book and main session teaching, which is based on the Exodus narrative.
Many Stories: One Redeemer
Redemption Groups are not support groups, nor do they provide professional counseling or therapy. Rather, they rely on the intervention of a real and living God by the power of the redemption that has already been accomplished in Jesus. While each group is gender-specific, participants are not stigmatized by “issue.” Rather, we seek the gospel alone as our hope for healing and deliverance from all sorts of suffering and sin. Thus, people are not segregated by their specific struggles. In a given group, for example, one person may be facing the consequences of adultery, while another battles the compulsions of alcoholism; someone else may be confronting lies they have believed since being abused as a child, while another breaks free of oppressive anxiety. Through this diversity we can relate to one another and see the same gospel themes richly applied, even when the particulars of our experiences differ.
Jesus Changes Hearts
Redemption Groups are not a replacement for regular community, but serve a short-term goal of building a solid foundation for ongoing gospel-based, heart-focused change. We hope for significant strides to be made while in the group, that will bear fruit as the participant continues to grow and change in close relationships in the regular rhythms of community discipleship.

What is Counseling in Community?
At Mars Hill Church we want to create a culture of people—particularly, in Community Groups—who are willing and equipped to care for those faced with afflictions and struggles of various kinds. We recognize that counseling isn’t just something that happens one-on-one behind closed doors, but rather in all aspects and areas of life (coffee shop, bus stop, break room, living room, etc.). Instead of a select team of specialists, we need an entire community of people dedicated to and capable of loving and caring for one another.
The eight-week Counseling in Community class is designed to establish a biblical foundation for counseling and provide opportunities to put these principles into practice. This class is for people who are interested in serving at post-service prayer, pursuing Redemption Group leadership, becoming a volunteer counselor or premarital counselor, or simply improving their ability to walk with friends and Community Group members through their struggles.
